This is the autobiography of John Morris Gillette, who is often referred to as "The Father of Rural Sociology." Gillette earned one of the first Ph.D.s in Sociology from the University of Chicago (under John Dewey and Albion Small) and then transferred his expertise to the northern plains, serving for a few years at Valley City Normal School in North Dakota (now Valley City State University) and then to a long successful career at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks....

In 2007 Ellendale, North Dakota celebrated its 125th anniversary with the publication of a major town history book and festivities that stretched throughout the year.  One of the main events was a history pageant, put on by the Ellendale Historical Society and various volunteers, and hosted by Grant Crabtree.  The event was held in the TBC fieldhouse.  This pageant marked the continuation of a long tradition in Ellendale.  The town has had quite a few history pageants in the past, including...

The campus of UND-Ellendale Branch in Ellendale North Dakota, is the only college campus in North Dakota to have been closed.  In 1972 it was purchased for one dollar by Trinity Bible Institute, which moved to Ellendale from its then current home in Jamestown.  Before the arrangement with Trinity came about, Ellendale town leaders advertised far and wide for a buyer.  This color brochure was the centerpiece of their effort to draw a new institution to Ellendale.  It's a valuable historical...

In 1906 the Oakes Times published this magazine as a supplement for subscribers.  Its goal was to promote the businesses and people of Dickey County, with emphasis upon the town of Oakes and surrounding area.  It contains hundreds of valuable historical photos and details that would otherwise likely be lost to posterity.   In 1986, in celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Oakes Times did a reprint of this 1906 magazine.  The reprint, however, is monochromatic and lacks much of the fine...

This is a classic survey of conditions in rural towns and schools, written near the height of concern for progressive rural reform in the first decades of the 20th century.  Kennedy was a longtime professor and dean of education at the University of North Dakota.  Ken Smith (president of the Ellendale Historical Society) authored a doctoral dissertation on Kennedy in 2001.  If you would like more information about Kennedy and his legacy, you may email kenneth.smith@ndsu.edu

the 1938 Snitcher is the 7th yearbook produced by the State Normal and Industrial School at Ellendale, the preceding volumes being produced in 1912, 1915, 1917, 1918, 1925, and 1937.  When publication resumed following the post 1925 hiatus, the volumes featured considerably less content, both in terms of writing and photographs.  They do, however, provide an essential historical record of faculty, staff and students, and some valuable glimpses into the school's development and its ethos.

Following the fire in 1916 that destroyed most of Ellendale's business district, the town's two newspaper buildings were both wiped out.  The _Dickey County Leader_ rebuilt, and absorbed the remaining assets of its longtime Democratic competitor, Hector H. Perry's _North Dakota Record_.  The Leader's new building was finished early in the new year.  This front page article provides a great deal of detail about the new building and the equipment that was installed in it.
